COMMERCIAL FIRE CHECKLIST

 BUSINESS FIRE SAFETY CHECKLIST

-Do you have any extension cords being used in place of permanent wiring, affixed to structures, or extended through walls, ceilings or floors?   (Extension cords cannot be used as permanent wiring.

-Do you have multi-plug adaptors?   The use of multi-plug adaptors is prohibited.

-Are you using power strips, are they listed having a 15-amp breaker and are they are plugged directly into the wall receptacle? If the power strip does not list at least 15-amp breaker or if multiple power strips are plugged into each other, THIS IS PROHIBITED.

-Do you have any electrical appliances and are the electrical cords supplying power to that appliance in good condition?

-Is there a clear area in front of all electrical control panel boxes, with a minimum width of 36” or the width of the panel if wider than 36” and is it maintained from the operating face of the electrical control panel with an unobstructed means of access to an aisle or corridor?

-Is there is a clear aisle or passageway to all exit doors with nothing stored in front of an exit?  Building occupants must be able to get to the exit doors quickly and safely, exit corridors and aisles shall remain unobstructed, free of any material or matter at all times.   This also includes a clear space both in front and behind breakaway exit doors.

-Are the Exit doors able to be opened from inside with a single action motion and no locks preventing exit?

Are the Emergency light fixtures working properly, and if equipped with a test button, are you pushing to check for proper operation? Fire Code requires self-inspection and record of inspection monthly.

Do the exit signs illuminate, and can they be seen from everywhere within your business, does the backup-battery work (push the test button and the exit sign should illuminate under battery power)?  Fire Code requires self-inspection and record of inspection monthly.

Are combustible materials stored in boiler rooms, mechanical rooms or electrical equipment rooms?  (Combustible materials shall not be stored in these areas)

Is the area around the furnace and water heater clear of combustible materials?  There should be a minimum of 18"  clearance.

Have you checked for obstructions such as partitions, racks or piled merchandise placed in the way of the sprinkler head with a minimum clearance below sprinkler heads of 18" 

Are there portable fire extinguisher mounted in the business?  They must be mounted, readily accessible, and visible to you and your customers when it is needed. Fire Code requires self-inspection and record of inspection monthly.

Have all fire extinguishers been inspected within the last 12 months by a licensed contractor and have you checked the tags on your extinguishers monthly to see if they are current?

If your building has a fire alarm system, has it been inspected by a licensed contractor in the last 12 months?

If your building has a fire sprinkler system, has it been inspected by a licensed contractor in the last 12 months?

Are your trash dumpsters located more than five feet from combustible walls and roof overhangs?
